Week 12

Posted by William on September 6, 2011

In your 12th week of pregnancy, your fetus is 10 weeks old.

The fetus is about 60 millimeters long, or nearly 2 1/2 inches. He or she weighs roughly 0.4 ounce, or approximately 11 grams.

By the end of this week, the arms will be almost in proportion to the rest of the body, but the legs are not as well developed. The fingers and toes are no longer webbed. The genitals are beginning to look male or female. Click here for an illustration. A Doppler listening device at your practitioner’s office may make it possible to hear the heartbeat this week — or sometime soon. Click here for an illustration of the fetal heart at term.

Around this time, the baby starts to produce urine and release it into the amniotic fluid. The baby swallows this fluid, but waste products are transferred to your blood stream through the placenta. Click here for an illustration of the placenta.

Morning sickness should be going away — hooray! If it hasn’t tapered off yet, it probably will in the next few weeks. If it has been bad, your weight might have stayed the same, or you could have lost a few pounds. Gaining four to eight pounds is also normal. Most of the weight comes in the final stages of pregnancy. Your breasts are getting bigger (still?!), and you may be showing a little now, especially if this is not your first baby. Appreciate your bustline now, because your belly will soon be the main attraction.
Week 12 Action Plan

Here are some things to consider doing now:

* Maternity Clothes. Start building your maternity wardrobe. You won’t need a closet full of new clothes, but you will need a few essentials. Maternity stores are especially good for bathing suits, panty hose, underwear and bras . If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on other items, second-hand stores are a good bet. Borrowing from friends might even be better!

* Time for two. If you and your partner are thinking about planning a vacation or a weekend escape, the second trimester (which starts next week) is usually a good time to get away; generally morning sickness abates and you’re not so big that you’re uncomfortable. It’s a good time to enjoy your uninterrupted time together!
