GPoWS Platform Process Background

At the 2001 Fall Green Party Convention in Chehalis the State Party agreed to affiliate with the National Party. To meet the requirements of the National Party, at the May convention in Ellensburg, we voted to accept the GP-US 2000 Platform until we developed our own. Last month we sent out a call for your input to begin that process.

Well, we’re on the way. Some of you have taken the time to address the areas you feel are important. Green Party of Washington State Platform Committee extends our appreciation to you. Your involvement is making a difference and demonstrates just how seriously you’re willing to apply your talents and how important you feel this effort is. However, we need more input from those of you who received the call but haven’t had the opportunity to respond. We all have busy lives. Squeezing in time for one more project is certainly a challenge but, if we are to build a comprehensive platform, your input is critical.

Generally, we are concerned with four major categories - Democracy, Social Justice, Economic Sustainability and Environmental Sustainability.

To assist you, there’s a broader outline below, describing the major areas of consideration as covered in the National Platform. Please select an area of particular interest to you and develop your concept as you feel it pertains to our particular bio-region and specific state issues and interests.

Guidelines:

Remember - you don’t have to spend hours doing this. A plank in a platform is just like the plank in a deck - simple, straight forward, not too long and true. Besides, we’re going to send what we get back to all of you for your critiquing. So you’ll have more opportunity flesh it out.

Don’t feel restricted to what you see below. If you feel there are issues not covered by the National platform, like Affordable Housing, be sure to include those.

Please return your comments to GPoWS Platform Committee by the 13th of August for consideration and inclusion in a coherent Platform the membership will vote on when finalized.

If you wish to contribute more time and energy to this effort in the capacity of a Platform Committee member, please contact us. Your energy and services are appreciated.

Thanks for participating in an effort that will guide our actions for the foreseeable future.
