New Contraceptive Patch Rivals The Pill

Posted by William on January 13, 2012

Oral contraceptive pills (OCs) are the birth control method of choice for over 12 million American women. Used as directed, OCs are extremely effective at preventing unwanted pregnancies, and have an excellent safety record. When women fail to follow prescribed dosing instructions, for example by not taking a pill daily, the failure rate increases substantially. WAIT! There is more to read… read on »

Resistance is Not Futile

Posted by William on January 11, 2012

To encourage the mature market to participate in strength training, the Cooper Fitness Center organized a group strength-training program called CREST (Classics’ Resistance Exercise Strength Training), which is designed to encourage independence and improve quality of life for participants. CREST concentrates on the stabilization muscles (neck, shoulders, back, abdomen and hips) to “improve core strength, thus improving balance, gait, postural alignment and general body awareness,” says Michael Kolling, mature market director. Measurable results are seen after completing the seven-week program. WAIT! There is more to read… read on »

Immunity Challenge

The challenge is called Temple Transfer. “The temple is made up of 6 pieces. Each tribe has 3 platforms. Your challenge is to transfer your temple from platform 1 to platform 3. You can move only one piece at a time. In addition, you can never have a larger piece on top of a smaller piece.” WAIT! There is more to read… read on »

Combating Foodborne Illness

Posted by William on December 29, 2011

Authorities point to increases in year-round consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables and to increases in dining out as contributors to increases in “reported” incidents of foodborne illness.

What enables such consumption is food importation, and foods are usually imported from developing regions, where surveillance may be inadequate in terms of food safety. WAIT! There is more to read… read on »

Pace Yourself with Perceived Exertion

Posted by William on December 26, 2011

Many people learn to regulate exercise intensity using subjective sensations of how hard an exercise feels, sometimes in conjunction with occasional heart rate checks, but often without. The most common tool for this assessment is the Borg Scale of Perceived Exertion, a scale that runs vertically from 6 to 20. As you exercise, you pick the number that most closely corresponds to your sensation of exertion, with the help of verbal cues such as “fairly light” and “somewhat hard” accompanying the numbers. While the common-sense nature of this approach appeals to many exercisers, others worry that its simplicity compromises accuracy. WAIT! There is more to read… read on »

Special-case motivation

Although keeping members motivated is never easy, members who participate in Special Case Monitoring tend to stick with the program. “We find that with the education and the lectures we offer, there’s a lot of self motivation going on,” says Assistant Program Manager Glen Newman, who adds that members are always quick to register for new programs. “We just get the wheels spinning — they’re the ones who keep them turning,” he says. Exercise Programming, Part 1

Posted by William on December 7, 2011

When Carol Welsh started exercising a little more than a year ago, things didn’t look so good for the grandmother of three. Her cholesterol hovered above 300, she was borderline hypertensive, and just five years shy of retirement, heart disease was threatening to darken what were supposed to be her golden years. WAIT! Staying Fit During Pregnancy

Posted by William on December 2, 2011

Long gone are the days when becoming pregnant dictated that a woman prop up her feet for nine months and wait with ever-growing dismay as the pounds pile up, her ankles swell and her self-esteem plummets to an all-time low.

The Note She Left

Posted by William on November 29, 2011

The news came, as surely as a rain cloud pockets pennies of a copper sun. “She’s gone.” In a heap of tears, clippings from the grass of love, her son dissolves as if he’s sugar in your tea. Your arms are all he has this hour, to push the sand through grieving glass. WAIT! There is more to read… read on »

Should I Stop HRT?

Posted by William on November 22, 2011

Q.I will complete five years of being on HRT in the year 2000. I am 59 years old and happy enough to continue with regular menstrual cycles as of now. However, my gynecologist says I must stop the use of HRT on completion of five years. What’s the reasoning for this? Are there other views on this matter? WAIT! There is more to read… read on »
