About
The Green Party is Growing
The Green Party offers a principled alternative to the Democratic and Republican Parties. Greens are committed to peace, social justice, environmental protection and grassroots democracy - fundamental values that have been largely abandoned by the two major parties.
In Washington State
The Green Party of Washington State is building party activism, a process stimulated during the 2000 Nader/LaDuke campaign. The Green Party has steadily grown to 16 affiliated locals. Additionally, the Green Party has members, organizers, and locals in formation throughout the State.
Today, the Party is experiencing dramatic growth through a vibrant community of local affiliates and associates.
In the USA
The Green movement in the U.S. has grown steadily since 1984. Information on the Green Party of the United States is available at their Web Site.
Recent Surveys indicate that the Green Party is the only party showing explosive growth in the US. Evidence indicates this is because we are the only party that addresses the broadest concerns of the grassroots constituency in this country. The Green Party realizes that neither politics nor corporate influence can continue to operate on the “as usual” model. Changes must occur and The People must be the impetus for those changes.
As of 2002 there were statewide organizations in all 50 states and the District of Columbia with 152 Greens holding elected office in 20 states.
Around the World
Internationally, Green parties have grown in more than 75 countries on five continents and are coalition partners in several European governments.
Working for the Public Interest
We believe that political parties exist to serve the public interest and promote good governance. Seeking political power for its own sake is at the root of what is so wrong with the other two major parties.
Green Party Activists show up! They work in solidarity with environmentalists, workers, and defenders of civil rights. They promote peace in their own lives, and in the streets, if necessary. They, truly, are what Democracy looks like!
The issues that we support cover the full range of progressive causes. For example:
Support Fair Trade, and curb the power of undemocratic institutions like the WTO.
Support the right of working people throughout the world to collective bargaining, a living wage, and a safe workplace.
Support local sustainable agriculture, clean up our environment, and label genetically modified food.
Support alternative modes of transportation and oppose urban sprawl.
Restore the freedom of oppressed people, and end racism and sexism.
Promote universal health care utilizing an effective single payer system.
Reduce global militarism and violence.
Restoring Genuine Democracy
A powerful, new progressive movement is building around the world, and in our local communities. This movement will produce new institutions, new policies, and new kinds of elected representatives.
The Green Party is helping to create and shape that movement. It is serving the public interest by offering a responsive alternative wherever existing political institutions and parties fall short of today’s higher political expectations.
To be Green is to believe in that which is still good in today’s political institutions. Indeed, Greens offer support to all those who are working to promote green values, regardless of partisan labels. That’s what is truly special about this budding Green movement. We are working toward a comprehensive, and inclusive, vision of the future. Our party is one means to that end, but it is not the only means.
You are invited to join this progressive movement, and offer your own unique ideas and energy. You will feel welcomed by a political community that honors diversity, acknowledges innovation, and is focused on the things that truly matter.
